How does Greenshield fit with the Continental SuperGrid?
Back to FAQs The Continental SuperGrid is what Scientific American is calling the Power Grid for the Hydrogen Economy. This grid will supplement the existing high-voltage electrical distribution system using buried pipes that will carry both hydrogen and electricity from generating facilities to consumers. Two buried 30-cm (12-inch) energy pipes could carry 10 gigawatts, roughly the output of 5 nuclear power plants. Instead of high-voltage wires strung on massive towers, a buried SuperGrid energy pipe will contain a low-temperature superconductor that transports electricity at close to 100% efficiency, cooled by liquid hydrogen surrounding the conductor. Therefore, a remote power plant (nuclear, wind-powered, hydro-electric, fossil-fueled or solar) would produce a mix of electricity and hydrogen and deliver both energy forms to population centers through SuperGrid energy pipes, taking advantage of the low temperature of the hydrogen (20 kelvins) to maintain the zero-resistance of the c
