Fighting for re-election in a very close race, New Jersey governor Jon Corzine was on the campaign trail early on Election Day, at Ponzio’s Diner in Cherry Hill. Corzine (in file photo above) says he’s “very confident” that voters will do what’s best for the Garden State: “I’m excited. I just came from a great rally down the road — it had almost two thousand people. So I think there’s a lot of effective efforts to get out the vote.” The Democratic incumbent says he’s still got much work to do before he settles down to watch the returns on Tuesday evening. Republican challenger Chris Christie was concentrating his final day of campaigning in the northern part of the state. Creigh Deeds turned to the man he hopes to succeed as Virginia governor to lash the Republican front-runner in a final rally before Tuesday’s election. Gov. Tim Kaine, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, attacked the conservative record of Republican Bob McDonnell and his attempts to mask it. McDonnell has a strong lead in the polls and Kaine is barred by Virginia’s Constitution from seeking re- election. Meanwhile, McDonnell paid little attention to Kaine’s slight as he and two fellow Republicans on the statewide ticket jetted to seven separate Monday rallies. Polls the past week showed McDonnell ahead by 11 to 18 percentage points, and his ticketmates also leading by solid margins, fueling hopes of a GOP sweep one year after Democrats dominated the state in the presidential race.
