How does Giottos Lamentation reveal the essentials of his style?
In ‘The Lamentation’ figures are seen from the back which Giotto did often to emphasize the foreground. The strong diagonal of the rocky ledge also concentrates our attention on the group and physically separates them from the heavenly realm. The grouping of the figures puts the viewer in a position of looking in from behind, or ‘staged’ like a drama. This device was a contradiction to the old way of frontality.
