How does GimmieWiFi work?
The GimmieWiFi system uses the wireless networking that is built into most laptop computers and handheld computing devices. The wireless networking uses a bidirectional radio that is usually referred to as “WiFi”. A computer communicating over WiFi is essentially the same as it it were communicating on a wired computer network. When someone opens their laptop computer they will be able to select any WiFi network within range of their computer. If they select the GimmieWiFi network and open a program called a browser (on a Windows computer this might be Internet Explorer) then they will immediately see a login screen for the business that owns that GimmieWiFi network. The login screen will show a logo for that business and some instructions. At this point they need a “PassCode.” In a restaurant they would flag down the server and say “Gimmie WiFi.” The server would then use the restaurant point of sale system to print a free PassCode ticket and give it to the laptop user.
