How does Fossett s Comstock autopilot work?
The computerized autopilot is the first operable balloon autopilot. It maintains a constant altitude for the balloon by controlling the burner. It does this by evaluating data and dictating when and how often the burner should fire. (The burner on the balloon regulates helium temperature. Helium controls the lift by expanding, helping the balloon rise. When the burner is off, the helium contracts, which makes the balloon descend.
