How does “extropy” relate to “entropy”?
Entropy is a precisely-defined phenomenon in thermodynamics which has been used as a metaphor in a great variety of less rigorous contexts. Max More has suggested the following definition for “extropy”: A measure of intelligence, information, energy, vitality, experience, diversity, opportunity, and growth. This definition invokes the opposite of most of the qualities that are commonly referred to metaphorically by the word “entropy”. Although most believe in the truth of the assertion, “entropy alwys increases”, few understand the limits of its application. Biological evolution is a good example of an increase in order driven by a more widespread increase in disorder.
