How does Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) work?

0

DLS works by measuring the intensity of light scattered in a particular direction. The intensity changes with time due to the Brownian motion of particles in the suspension. DLS instruments obtain a correlation factor from the intensity versus time profile. The exponentially decaying correlation function is related to diffusion coefficients. Using the Stokes-Einstein equation and these coefficients the instrument calculates the particle radius.
