How does Distance Learning fit into restructuring?
The academic units determine their curriculum. Distance Learning provides the infrastructure to deliver that curriculum so the academic units are not duplicating that infrastructure. Over the last two years, Distance Learning operations have been restructured substantially. Field staff has been reduced, interactive television is transitioning to web-based technology, and the position of interim vice president was established to create a more centralized organization and allow for more rapid responsiveness to new markets. These moves followed an Eduprise Report about the future of distributed learning in Arizona and in the West. A new distributed learning council, with appointed faculty and dean representation, oversees this organization and advises the vice president, provost, and president. It’s important to note as well that Distance Learning alone already has cut about $2 million from its budget in the last two years.
