How does DFO determine which science activities get funded?
The most important factor is the extent to which projects will further conservation and the sustainability of fisheries. Second, the extent to which projects will increase the economic performance of fisheries and enhance the effective management of fisheries is also considered. Among new projects, those that address small pelagics (herring, mackerel and capelin), lobster and Pacific salmon, will be given a higher priority. Funding guidelines have been developed by DFO and are available through regional DFO offices. These guidelines will be finalized after further consultation with industry.
