DEVONthink Pro stores all documents in a package, a folder that looks like a file that you can double-click or otherwise manipulate like a regular file in the Finder. All documents that you import are copied into a folders of the package. The imported files are not changed in any way but merely copied into the self-contained database package. Inside the ‘Files.noindex’ sub-folder of the package, the files are stored in folders for their respective type and further sub-folders that help quickly locate them. The file name of each documents is exactly the same as the corresponding document name that you see in DEVONthink. In addition, the package contains a set of ten index files named ‘DEVONthink-x.dtMeta’ as well as a ‘Settings.plist’ file containing database-specific preferences.
