There are two basic concepts involved in discussing employment and unemployment—total employment as measured by the number of positions currently filled and alternatively as a measure of people who have jobs. The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of households (or people). The household survey produces estimates on the labor force, the employed, the unemployed, the unemployment rate and demographic information on the employed and unemployed. The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program is a monthly survey of business establishments (or positions). The CES produces estimates on the number of employees on nonfarm payrolls, average hourly earnings, average weekly earnings, and average weekly hours.
