How does Cuba compare to other Caribbean places you’ve visited?
Ian Wright: I’ve been to Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba. Cuba is extraordinary because it’s quite colourful and chilled and laid-back, but you forget that until you go out of Havana and then you realize, jeez, yeah, this is a Caribbean island—it’s got palms, it’s lush. OP: And the architecture there? IW: The architecture—those colonial buildings—is all around, and there’s some extraordinary renovation going on. Along the Malecón, which is the main bit on the seafront, there are a lot of those buildings that are crumbling a bit from salt water, pests and all that, but honestly, it’s beautiful. The old city is just amazing. But also, what’s nice about Havana is there’s hardly any street lighting.
