How does Corporate Welfare Work in Reno?

A few years ago, the airport commissar and his staff on the Airport Authority Board decided they wanted a new runway and a bunch of other expensive items to beef up the area… to the tune of about $100,000,000. They figured out a way to finance the expense – with the USA taxpayer footing the bill. Here is basically how this one works: 1. The airport floats some bonds to pay for their cancerous expansion. 2. Simultaneously the FAA “promises” to send numerous $$multi-million dollar grants each year. 3. The airlines, of course, agree to “back” this scheme. 4. Each year the Reno-Casino airport requests one of these grants (definition, “your taxes”)… and up to now they have gotten them. The most recent, for a cool $$5.5 million, was approved on 18 Feb by White and his Airport Authority Board staff.
