How does constipation worsen urinary incontinence?
This is probably due to the effect of a large faecal mass within the rectum (1) Occupying space within the pelvis and thereby preventing complete bladder filling and (2) Possibly stimulating the pelvic parasympathetic nerves. The faecal mass may also press on the bladder neck, or alter the angle between the bladder neck and the proximal urethra thereby interfering with voiding. Most doctors are well aware of the observation that treating constipation, and particularly faecal impaction, may help to relieve urinary retention.
