How does combined cycle cogeneration work?
In combined cycle operations, a prime mover such as a gas turbine or internal combustion engine is powered by a fossil fuel. The turbine or engine drives a generator to produce electricity. The waste heat is captured and used to produce additional steam in a heat recovery steam generator. This steam is then used to power a steam turbine to produce additional electricity. The Bcancour combined cycle cogeneration facility shown here will burn natural gas in the gas turbines to drive the generators to produce electricity. The hot combustion gases that exhaust from the combustion turbines will pass through heat recovery steam generators producing steam. The steam will be used to drive the steam turbine generator, producing additional electricity. A portion of the steam will be extracted from the steam turbine and sent to the two steam hosts for process use. Electricity generated from the plant will be supplied to the Hydro-Qubec electrical grid for distribution and sale. This plant will ge
