Though they both introduce water into your rectum for cleansing, an enema only cleans the lower part of your colon whereas a colonic can cleanse the entire length of the colon. As for how it works. There are two systems (open or closed) in an open system water is introduced into your colon and you expel it when you feel full. This process goes on for about 45 minutes or so repetitiously.
