How does collective bargaining take place?
The union membership establishes a process to select members of its collective bargaining committee. The committee conducts research on current conditions of employment, both written and unwritten practices, meets with groups of our members and may even conduct survey research to determine the interests and priorities of the bargaining unit. Traditionally, the union presents bargaining proposals covering terms of employment to the administrations negotiating team. Under state law, the designated bargaining representative is the Board of Regents. They must establish capacity to negotiate and administrate a collective bargaining agreement. However, the law also states that the Board of Regents must closely coordinate these activities with the Office of State Employment Relations.
