How does coaching differ from mentoring, consulting and counselling?
We believe the purpose of coaching is about accelerating development, potential and leveraging performance Mentoring is narrower in its application, usually involving a more experienced person imparting a defined set of skills to a less experienced person for application in a defined set of circumstances. While professional development may result over time, it is usually focussed on understanding procedures and completing tasks more effectively. With mentoring greater emphasis is placed on the timely transfer of technical knowledge and skills rather than the need for behavioural change. Consulting is usually fixed project or intervention driven, based on clear and agreed deliverables within a given timeframe. Consulting provides specialist advice or solutions that will have immediate and/or long-term application to organisations rather than individuals, although there is often a low rate of transfer of these specialist skills to the organisation.
