How does climate change and rising ocean levels trigger or increase the number of earthquakes?
With the exception of water, almost every substance expands slightly as it gets warmer. In mose cases, this change is so imperceptible that you cannot notice it (unless you are a Musician; then it will cause your instrument to be out of tune) The same principleappless to the crust of the ealthoughlthogh a tiny temperature change would have an unnoticeable affect on a small object, techtonic plates can be millions of square miles, so any such change would be amplified. the expansion of the tectonic plates could then lead to an increase in earthquakes. However, it should be noted that the chance of global warming ACTUALY affecting the number of eathquakes is very small. It is more likely that the changes are related to a natural cycle of movement occuring deep in the earths core, not heating of plates.
