How does climate change affect Peru?
We have some clear impact of climate change such as accelerated glacier retreat of the Andes as well as changing of rain patterns which actually affects not only export oriented agriculture but small holding farmer’s income. There are a lot of disaster risks that are going to increase. For example, instead of the rain going to be distributed in six months, as it used to be, now it is raining the same amount in just one month or a few weeks. So we have landslides and floods. And, in addition, the dry season has enlarged. What are good solutions for adaptation in Peru? We have to invest in a participatory process so we can ensure more long term results. We need to concentrate on how to recover ancient knowledge and to incorporate this into climate change policy at the local level.
