How does CICT plan to bridge the digital divide in the country?
Bridging the digital divide in the country is an enormous challenge considering that the Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands. It is clear that no single entity would be able to undertake this gargantuan task on its own. The CICT has therefore taken multi-stakeholder approach in the crafting and implementation of the Strategic Roadmap for the Philippines CeC Programme. It realises that the digital infrastructure of the country needs significantly more investment. We currently have one of the lowest PC and broadband penetrations in the world. I believe that the best approach would be a partnership between the public sector and the private sector. We are hoping that the DICT bill is passed soon, so that we can take on the communications functions of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and we can work with the telecommunications and Internet service providers to come up with creative solutions.
