How does chocolate affect dogs?
Imagine if you weren’t allowed to have chocolate. If you were a dog you wouldn’t be able to have any chocolate. Dogs don’t have digestive systems like ours, so they can’t digest chocolate. There is a chemical in chocolate called theobromine. Theobromine has a dangerous effect on the dog’s body that can cause heart and nerve damage, and even death. The amount that is too much for a dog is about one hundred and twenty-five milligrams, but it depends on the size of the dog and the kind of chocolate. An M&M size piece of chocolate is not a lot for you, but it can hurt your dog. Even small amounts of theobromine can make your dog vomit, act restless, and have really bad diarrhea that can cause dehydration. If untreated, your dog can have an irregular heartbeat, stop breathing, and go into a coma. So never let your dog have chocolate!
