How does CGEP make its courses available to students in the distance environment?
Most of CGEP’s course offerings are broadcast live using two-way digital videoconferencing technology. The two-way videoconferencing environment provides students in the distance environment with an interactive, real-time learning environment. They can see and hear the faculty member as he or she lectures. They can also see the faculty members lecture notes in real time. If a student in the distance environment has a question, he or she can ask the question by pressing a button to open an audio link back to UVa. While the question is being asked, the faculty member can also see that student in the remote environment. While the courses are broadcast live, videotapes and on-line archives of all classes are available until the end of the semester. If a student misses a class because of a personal or work-related conflict, he or she can view that lecture by requesting a tape or by viewing the class session from UVa’s stream media web site.
