One way to think about Rogers is that he went against Freud, Jung and others that put alot into the unconscious and that the therapist was the trained “expert” who told the client what they were missing. Therefore getting better is a conscious process in the hands of the client. Rogers brought about a person-centered or client-centered therapy that looked at the client knowing their problems and how to get better and the purpose of the therapist was to help them in their normal growth. Rogers saw the client as inherently well rather then pathological and this positive view of human nature allows the client to get better on their terms rather then the therapist’s. So Rogers believed in unconditional positive regard and building the rapport, the client learns to accept and respect themselves. I will summarize and keep it simple. Rogers focuses on: 1. Conscious vs. unconscious 2. Client can help themselves get better vs. only therapist can help clients get better 3. Development and growth
