How does bus rapid transit attract riders?
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) defines BRT as “a rapid mode of transportation that can provide the quality of rail transit and the flexibility of buses.” The Transit Cooperative Research Program has expanded this basic definition to describe BRT as “a flexible, rubber-tired form of rapid transit that combines stations, vehicles, services, running ways, and ITS elements into an integrated system with strong identity.” TCRP documents suggest that a BRT system is most successful in an area with an urban population exceeding 750,000 and employment in the CBD between 50,000 and 75,000 with dense land use patterns to facilitate transit use.
