How Does Bodyboarding Differ From Surfing?
Introduction Both bodyboarding and surfing have many of the same moves–and the same dangers. Both use boards to propel the participant over, through and on top of waves all in the name of enjoyment. But surfers and bodyboarders alike will tell you that is where the similarities end. The Board The obvious difference between bodyboards and surfboards is the size. Bodyboards are short pieces of foam with a plastic bottom. The foam top is known as a deck. Surfboards are much longer and originally were made from wood but are now made out of a polyester resin or carbon fiber. Positioning While the traditional stance for a surfer is standing with the weight distributed more to the back, bodyboards offer a greater variety of options for riding. The first bodyboards were designed for riders to lay on their stomachs and ride the wave in that fashion.
