How does beer production affect the environment?
Beer is a natural product that has been made by nearly every culture in the world for thousands of years. Brewing beer today requires the same raw materials that it has for centuries: grains, hops, yeast and water. However, the scale of beer production has increased exponentially and modern breweries now have the benefit of electricity for heating and cooling. These activities, of course, have an impact on the environment. Electricity is consumed in beer production as well as large amounts of water, which is the main ingredient in beer. Waste water, solid waste and some gas emissions are discharged as a result of production. At Carlsberg, our goal is to minimise our impact on the environment wherever possible and to decrease our use of natural resources. And it is working. Through programmes of optimisation, reduction and recycling, consumption of natural resources has reduced for each unit produced and so has the amount of discharge.
