How does Australia’s school system compare to others around the world?
Australia has a high-quality, world-class, schooling system which performs strongly against other countries in international student assessments. In the 2009 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Australia performed well above the OECD average across all three domains assessed (reading literacy, mathematical literacy and science literacy). In both reading and scientific literacy, Australian students were outperformed by students in six countries, while in mathematical literacy, Australian students were outperformed by students in twelve countries. Despite Australia’s strong international performance, challenges remain in providing opportunities for all Australian students to perform to their full potential. This includes supporting excellence at the higher levels of achievement but also ensuring no students are left behind and all students are receiving a quality education.
