How does atomic structure lead to the different broad kinds of elements?
The atomic weight of elements determine what structure the element will have. The atom weight is determined by the number of electrons, neutrons & protons. The number of electrons in the outer shell of the atom then determines the way the element behaves. In the metal class of elements, the number of empty spaces in the outer electron shell determine the colour of the element.
