A digital certificate comprises of a public and private key. The private key resides only with the owner of that digital certificate. Any document that is encrypted for an individual is done using his public key and can be decrypted only with the corresponding private key. Any unauthorized person would not be able to decrypt and view the contents of an encrypted document since that person does not possess the recipients private key, which is necessary to decrypt the document.
