How does AppleGate Academy handle discipline?
Discipline is not a punishment. It is a learning process where we teach the children what is appropriate and what is inappropriate. The children we care for are always trying to test the boundaries or limits. They are naturally curious and inquisitive. Our responsibility is to let them know the limits while helping them achieve high self-esteem. They are all learning and all need our love, consideration and understanding. We follow a pro-active approach to discipline: • Before a “problem” occurs we redirect the children to another activity. • We anticipate potential conflicts and resolve them beforehand. • We discourage playing guns, karate or other violent games. • We encourage children to use their words. • We lead by example. Saying please and thank you. We are polite and courteous. We use a calm and soothing voice. We always sit down while eating or drinking. We use appropriate language. • We award the children for appropriate behavior. Giving them hugs, attention, stickers, awards
