How does an oil/water separator work?
The primary treatment incorporated in the basic oil/water separator is effluent retention. Retention time allows for the soils and hydrocarbon phases to separate from the aqueous phase. Hydrocarbons have a lower specific gravity than water and will float on the surface. The specific gravity of suspended solids is heavier than the aqueous phase and settles to the bottom of the chamber.
