How does an oil and gas company know how deep to drill?
Based upon previous drilling in an area or certain producing intervals known to exist in an area and known to be productive in other areas, an oil and gas company can determine the depth that these intervals should be encountered. They should then drill to a depth so as to encounter the interval that is the most promising in the area. Such interval is known as the “target zone”.
