Most built in tuners receive broadcast channels over the air by way of an antenna. NTSC tuners pick up legacy analog channels in the US and ATSC tuners pick up digital or HDTV channels in the US. PAL is used for analog in other countries such as the UK. Freeview or DVB tuners pick up broadcast digital via aerial (antenna) in other countries such as the UK. Some sets in the US also include cable digital tuning called QAM or Clear QAM (which tunes non scrambled cable channels). Some QAM equipped sets have a slot for a cable card (a descrambling card you can rent from your cable company). No current US sets have DirecTV or Dish Network built in (at least not mass marketed sets). Some Freeview sets in the UK might have Sky built in which is their direct to home satellite service.
