How does an electrolytic cell work?
Electrochemical reactions are heterogeneous chemical reactions that occur through the transfer of charge across the interface between an electrode and an electrolyte. The basic design of any electrolytic cell is the same and requires a complete electrical circuit including: electrodes (an anode and a cathode); ionic contact via an electrolyte between the electrodes; and electrical contact via an external electrical circuit between the electrodes.
