Firstly, when we are hurt by someone we care about an apology from that person is a way of meeting expectations you have for that person and the relationship you have with that person. An apology recognizes that a relationship still exists between you and that person, which is comforting from the perspective that loss of certain relationships is painful. Secondly, I think subconsciously we recognize how difficult it is for a person to make a meaningful apology.
