How does an Alberta drivers license work?

In Alberta, the learner’s licence is something that can be obtained by age 14 with a simple written test, but has a number of limitations to it – primarily that you must drive with a licensed driver in the passenger seat. In Alberta this is a “learner’s licence” or, more formally, a “Class 7 licence”. Since you are 17, you can get a full licence (or “class 5”) as the minimum age is 16. I am afraid I cannot comment on whether or not you will need to complete a new road test as I am unfamiliar with the licensing test you underwent to get your learner’s in BC – suffice it to say that if BC requires you to take another test to get your full license, then Alberta will require you to take a full road exam. Once you have your licence you go on “probation” for two years. There are a number of restrictions in this time – primarily there is a lower threshold for traffic violations. For more details, see the link below. If you need a test – best of luck!
