How Does an Aircraft Mechanic Spend a Workday?
An aircraft mechanic’s workday begins by reviewing the workload with the lead technician for work assignments. If the aircraft is in for an inspection that is due for a specific number of hours flown, the mechanic will inspect the log books. What he is looking for is the number of hours on the engine since the last major or minor overhaul (this includes airframes as well). He will use these figures as he looks through another set of log books for maintenance. All aircraft have time change components. The engine is usually good for around 2000 hours before it needs an overhaul, and there are components on the engine exterior that are changed at many different time schedules. The same thing applies to the airframe and most everything on the aircraft with the exception of the avionics. It is necessary to find out what parts in this inspection have expired and need to be replaced. The next step is to look at the log and see what type of maintenance was performed since the last inspection.
