How Does An Aircraft Carrier Float?
The earlier answers are correct that the Aircraft Carrier must displace its own weight of water in order to float (around 3 million cubic feet of water – a lot of water to push through when you’re under way). However, the really clever bit is keeping it upright with all that superstructure, and perhaps even more clever keeping it steady enough to land planes in a rough sea, and maybe even more clever still keeping it from sinking under enemy attack. The Naval Architects who design Carriers are pretty clever Technologists and Engineers. If you want to try getting your head round ‘staying afloat’ try googling ‘Metacentric Height’ or look it up in Wikipedia.
