Adalat, whose generic equivalent is nifedipine, works by lowering the amount of calcium found in muscles cells. Calcium is required of muscle cells in order for them to contract. By reducing this, it allows arteries and muscles to relax allowing better blood flow thus reducing blood pressure. Side Effects Almost all prescription medications have some side effects and Adalat is no different. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, tiredness, flushed appearance, constipation, abdominal pain, vomiting, swollen ankles, fast heart rate, visual disturbances, skin reactions, impotence, and depression.
