Acne occurs in hair follicles and the sebaceous glands attached to them. Sebaceous glands produce oily substance called sebum. In acne there is an overproduction of sebum and overgrow of the bacteria in the hair follicle. The sebum irritates the skin causing redness, swelling, pain and bacteria producing inflammation.
