how does access time and throughput for a solid start hard drive compare with conventional hard disks?
This compares a newer notebook hard drive with a 64 GB solid state drive (which I believe is the same size as that of optional one for the Macbook Air): SSD vs HDD The seek times of the solid state drive: Fast Access Time and Read/Write Speed – Under 0.2 msec, No seek time – Sequential Write: Up to 80MB/sec – Sequential Read: Up to 100MB/sec The seek time of your average 2.5 inch notebook hard disk drive you could expect to be about 10 ms, so more then 50 times slower then the solid state drive. Hope that helps! Sources: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/products/flash/Products_FlashSSD.
