How does ABS contribute to the conservation of biological diversity?
Benefits (monetary and/or non-monetary) that come from the utilization of genetic resources can be reinvested in the conservation of Canada’s biological and genetic resources. While money is of course useful in creating programs and infrastructure for environmental conservation, increased knowledge of Canada’s genetic diversity through research cooperation is equally important. Potential benefits arising from the environmentally sound utilization of genetic resources can also provide a supplementary incentive for the conservation of the environment. In addition, by managing access to in situ genetic resources, the government can make sure that these resources and the area where they are to be found are accessed with minimal impact on the environment.
