How Does a Water Softener System Work?
Hard water, which affects an estimated 85 percent of U.S. households, results from the presence of magnesium and calcium ions in tap water. Hard water generates numerous problems: soaps and detergents perform less effectively and form “soap scum” in washing machines, sinks and bathtubs; clothes develop a yellowish tint and brittle texture; and pipes develop deposits that can reduce water pressure or cause drainage problems. Household water softener systems represent one solution to these problems. Understanding the basic functioning of such systems allows consumers to make more informed choices, but also requires a cursory understanding of water chemistry.
