How does a washing machine tear holes in clothes?

I doubt your washing machine is to blame for the holes. More likely, your dryer is causing them. Dryers tear fabric apart with all the heat and dryness. Clorox also tears fabric apart…and the combination of chlorine bleach and machine drying is the worst. If you switch from Clorox to Oxi Clean and start hanging your clothes to air dry, the holes should become a thing of the past…except on socks. Socks will always get holes because of the wear and tear from walking on them.
