How Does a Veterinary Assistant Spend a Workday?
• Step 1:A veterinary assistant often spends mornings prepping animals for surgery since many veterinarians do surgeries in the morning hours. This involves making sure that the surgery room is clean and tools are sterilized. The assistant must also make sure that the oxygen machine is working. The vet assistant then retrieves the animal, sterilizes the body area that will be operated on, and helps secure the animal when anesthesia is given. After surgery, he will take the animal back to the kennel area to recover, and must consistently check on her to make sure the recovery process is going well. This involves checking the color of the gums, monitoring breathing and observing sleep habits.
