How does a serologist test blood to determine whether it is human or animal blood?
I am wondering as it refers to Serologist if checking antibodies of the identified human blood groups (ABO grouping) will help them and if so it is the cheapest way to check if the blood is human or of animals. The red cells of animals are very different from human, but then that is not serological testing.
Serology is the science that deals with the properties and reactions of serums, especially blood serum. The characteristics of a disease or organism shown by study of blood serums. DNA is one way of checking blood for human or animal characteristics. But a serologist will check other things that are more percise. An example is checking the blood for additional properties that are exclusive to the species. It is simple to start testing for human blood, we have a certain process that is followed in order for us to live. Example the oxygen level and way of transport is the same in mammals but not the same in invertebrates and other vertebrates. So by eliminating whether it is human blood the serologist will go on to other tests that determine what species and so on. It is not only determining the fact that it is human blood or animal blood but to specify the species. It is an awsome science.
