It depends on if it’s an open RTS (Star Wars: Empire at War) or level/mission based (Starcraft, Command & Conquer Red Alert) Open RTS’s let you use all (or most) units from the begging as well as allow you to play any area in the game. These tend to have little to no story line. Level/mission based RTS’s allow for a much more elaborate story line which usually takes place before you start or after you complete a mission with little talk during the mission to accent the story or give you instructions for the mission. Units (and tutorials) are usually added at the begging of a mission for use during the mission or are given to you by completing specific requirements during a mission (through completing specific requirements, killing enough of a specified unit, or stealing a unit) There really aren’t bosses as you would have them in an RPG or side-scroller.
