How Does a Locomotive Engineer Spend a Workday?
Before the Train Leaves the Station Engineers thoroughly inspect their locomotives and check on all aspects of the machine. This includes the brakes, engine and frame of the rail cars. It also includes all the electronic instruments that operate the machine. They also check the radios, and communication networks, as well as the safety devices on the train, from simple fire extinguishers to more complex safety brakes. When the Whistle Blows An engineer operates the controls to drive the locomotive. This involves the engine throttle and air brake systems. Much of his job during the trip involves monitoring gages. He keeps track of the brake system gauges, engine oil pressure, fuel and heat, as well as the air pump systems that are a big part of a locomotive’s operation. Everything Else An engineer must take time during the work day or before to check up on weather reports, accidents, track changes and maintenance and other events that affect their route of travel.
