How Does a DV Cable Work?
DV Cables and Firewire A DV cable has many names, but it is probably known most commonly in the United States as a FireWire cable. FireWire cables use the iLink or IEEE1394 data interface (there are have been several updates and variations to this format) to transmit information between devices, most commonly between an outside device and a computer. The entire DV cable system was developed by Apple for use with their products, specifically their Mac computers. The goal was to create a new type of data interface that was portable and very easy to use, and the project worked. The DV cable was taken up by the entire electronics industry as a standard by which to exchange certain types of data with their devices. Over the years, more and more FireWire ports have appeared on a variety of image-based devices. The iLink name was used by Sony for DV cable ports equipped on Sony devices, but the name FireWire has stuck for most devices. Construction DV cables are often compared to USB cables.
